On May 23 the Arizona Corporation Commission held a public hearing on its proposed rule to increase Arizona’s reliance on renewable energy to 15 percent by 2025.
The Arizona PIRG Education Fund and its coalition partners generated overwhelming support for the rule articulated by college students and retirees, citizens who use solar power for their homes, a Phoenix firefighter, and many others.
Participants spoke in favor of clean energy as a way of increasing energy independence and alleviating adverse public health impacts from coal-fired power plants, such as asthma.
A dozen organizations ranging from the Arizona Consumers Council to Republicans for Environmental Protection, along with the City of Scottsdale, spoke in favor of increasing renewable energy in Arizona.
Over the last year, approximately two-dozen businesses and the Prescott Chamber of Commerce have supported increasing renewable energy generation. More than 10,000 Arizonans have written letters, sent emails, or signed postcards and petitions showing support for the proposed rule. The Commission is expected to vote on the issue this fall.
