| WATER RESOURCES—Reckless development threatens Arizona’s water supplies. To ensure Arizona has enough water for future generations Arizona PIRG is advocating focusing growth in areas where there is an available supply. |

As Arizona enters an election season, Arizona PIRG is stepping up efforts to ensure Arizonans have a local, clean water supply. To build support for its Our Water, Our Future campaign, Arizona PIRG launched a door-to-door campaign, educating the public about the growing crisis facing Arizona.
“With Arizona’s strained water supply arguably one of the top issues for the next Legislature to address, we are calling on candidates to publicly state they will support efforts to require a local, clean water supply for all Arizonans,” said Keith Feikema, citizen outreach director for Arizona PIRG.
Reckless developers, spurred by Arizona’s burgeoning population, continue to build huge subdivisions, even where the state has declared an inadequate supply of water. Advocates are calling for candidates to publicly support their intent to protect this critical resource.
Arizona PIRG is encouraging candidates to take the Our Water, Our Future pledge that states that water should be conserved and used efficiently. More specifically the pledge asks candidates to support ensuring that all Arizonans have a 100-year local, clean water supply.
“Even municipalities in Arizona that have conserved water, such as Phoenix and Tucson, could lose financial and water resources to bail out developments with inadequate water supplies,” explained Feikema.
Arizona PIRG is going door-to-door in Flagstaff, Prescott, Tucson, Phoenix and cities and towns in between to educate and involve citizens. The goal is to demonstrate to candidates the state support for protecting Arizona’s water supply.
