As you can see from articles in this newsletter, we are
checking things off our “to-do” list at the federal level.
In the coming months, we will face down powerful
opposition as our progress continues in the Capitol.
We need to be able to trust our elected officials to make decisions based
on values and ideas. Both the U.S. Senate and the House passed lobby
reform measures by overwhelming margins.
We need to trust that our food and medicine is safe. Both the U.S. Senate
and House have moved legislation to give the FDA greater enforcement
powers and provide more information about the safety of drugs. We will
not cross it off our list yet, but we applaud this progress.
We need to lower the cost of higher education so that more of the next
generation can earn a college degree. Earlier this session, the U.S. House
of Representatives passed legislation to cut interest rates on student loans
in half. And the list goes on...
We know we’re facing significant opposition, and lobbyists in Washington,
D.C., will use all of their tricks to squelch political and consumer reforms,
so we remain guardedly optimistic as these reforms move forward.
Your support helps us stand up to powerful interests and win victories for
ordinary citizens. Thank you for your commitment to Arizona PIRG.
Sincerely,
Diane E. Brown
