Arizona PIRG Report

Advocates for the Public Interest

Arizona PIRG's Diane E. Brown

Executive Director Diane E Brown

Over the last year, I have often been asked to describe how our staff works to benefit the public interest.

Our policy advocates conduct unbiased research and promote practical solutions to real problems such as toxic chemicals in baby products—like our new report “The Right Start”. They bring problems and solutions to the attention of decision-makers, including state legislators, representatives of the executive branch, agency staff and local officials.

Our advocates work with elected officials and other allies to craft policy and then lobby decision-makers to adopt those ideas; for example, the work we are doing on water quantity.

Our field staff works to demonstrate support for Arizona PIRG proposals at the state and federal level. They reach out to individuals, media outlets and organizations to build visibility and gain support; for example, promoting clean energy in Arizona.

Our campus organizing staff works to develop educational programs to teach citizenship skills and inform the campus community about issues including affordable textbooks and financial aid (more information can be found at www.studentpirgs.org). They achieve concrete reforms and leave a legacy of skilled, trained leaders capable of tackling pressing problems.

And you are likely familiar with our citizen outreach staff from stopping you on the street, knocking on your door, or calling to educate and involve you and other concerned citizens on public interest issues such as clean water and clean energy.

Our Arizona-based staff is fortunate to work closely with our federal lobbying office in Washington, D.C. and the 28 other state PIRGs working on behalf of the public interest. Together we win results not just for Arizonans but for all Americans.

Research. Policy. Coalition-building. Working with elected officials and decision-makers. Media outreach. Educating and involving citizens. These are some of the ways Arizona PIRG staff are pleased to work on your behalf.

Thanks for making it all possible.
